The Mathemathics and Science Education Center (MSEC) is one of ten such Centers throughout the state.  The parent organization to which we belong is known as the Mathematics and Science Education Network and is headquartered in Chapel Hill.

The goals of the Centers are to:

  • Increase the quality and quantity of mathematics and science teachers in North Carolina Public Schools;
  • Strengthen instruction in mathematics and science in grades K-12;
  • Sponsor research and development in mathematics and science education; and
  • Increase the use of educational technology in schools.

Center activities are based on the needs of classroom instructors. The Center at Appalachian offers special workshops, summer institutes, graduate courses and other instructional programs aimed at helping update and recertify teachers. These activities are conducted within the Appalachian State University service area, which includes the following school systems:

Alexander County, Hickory City, Alleghany County, Iredell-Statesville, Ashe County, Mooresville City, Avery County, Mount Airy City, Burke County, Newton-Conover City, Caldwell County, Surry County, Catawba County, Watauga County, Davie County, Wilkes County, Elkin City, & Yadkin County.
